4 Day Coral Sea Trip 15

Spirit of Freedom was moored up in Watsons Bay, Lizard Island as it awaited the arrival of the new guests to embark on their Coral Sea Adventure.

We made our way out to Ribbon Reef #9 to Pixie Gardens to begin with a check out dive, this site offers nice calm conditions and a beautiful sloping coral garden with lots of coral bommies to swim around and search for little creatures.

Then we moved over to Monolith to do a double dive, the afternoon dive was nice as we made our way over to the massive structure of Pavona Coral as well asfinding lots of Nudibranchs along the way.

One of our 7 day guests Lisa was pretty stoked as she has been searching for a Nudibranch herself for the last few days, she finally found one on her own! Good work Lisa! There was also a nice big friendly grouper hanging just underneath SOF.

We then had a delicious dinner served by our amazing chef Sam before we jumped in for a night dive of a lifetime! It is very exciting to have a dozen or so White Tip Reef Sharks, GTs and Red bass following you as you lighten up the bommies around you.

We then stowed for our overnight crossing out to Osprey Reef, waking up for our first dive for a tender drop at Around the Bend, with the current not quite doing what we expected it was a slightly challenging dive, however there were still plenty of sharks and fish too look at! Second breaky was well deserved and then we jumped in for static at ATB.

After lunch we did tender drops up to Nautilus caves and enjoyed the amazing wall drop off as we have a cruisey dive back to the mother ship! Guests enjoyed the caves and swim throughs along the way. To finish off for the day we did another static at ATB, which was a perfect way to finish off as most of the guests were lucky enough to spot a few Hammer Heads cruising around.

Unfortunately due to some mechanical problems regarding SOF gearbox, which meant we had lost the use of the port side engine, we were unable to continue the trip as usual, we had to make the call to sadly cancel the rest of the trip and make our way safely back to Cairns a little earlier than expected.

We prepared the vessel for its long voyage back to our homeport. Onboard Spirit, the safety of the vessel and more importantly of our guests and crew is something we take extremely seriously, therefore due to the unforeseen circumstances we started our almost 30 hour crossing back home.

On behalf of myself, Skipper Rob and the rest of the SOF crew a massive thank you goes out to our awesome guests for your cooperation and understanding of the situation on hand. Big shout our to Skipper Rob and the crew for getting everyone home safe and sound back to Cairns on Sunday morning!

I hope you all enjoyed your time out on SOF and of course we hope you will be back to finish what we’ve started 😉

We hope to see you all back out on the reef in the very near future. Thank you!
