4 Day Coral Sea
It was a spectacular day as we loaded up Spirit Of Freedom and made way for Saxon Reef, a great way to kick off 2018. The weather forecast was also looking promising with 10-15 Knots from the north, which opens up a whole new selection of dive sites as the prevailing wind are from the Southeast.
We arrived at Saxon Reef by mid afternoon and settled in for two dives at ‘Turtle Bay’, a nice easy going dive site a nice spot to do some refreshing of skills and familiarize guests with procedures. After the dives we started our overnight journey north towards the Ribbon Reefs while we all sat down and gorged ourselves on amazing seafood spread for New Years Day prepared by our chef/magician Sam.
In the morning we awoke at the bottom of Ribbon Reef #3 where we would conduct a drift dive to start our five dive day off. On the wild side of Joanie’s Joy it was a real roller coaster of a ride! We moved up to Steve’s Bommie next in which is always a highlight of the trip with such an array of species.
Over lunch we steamed north to Ribbon #5 and did a dive on the back side of Rouge then for the afternoon and night dive we where at Gorgonian bay and as the name suggests there is gorgonian fan all over as well beautiful branching corals in the shallows.
Over night we continued moving north up to Ribbon #9 for another morning drift on Captains corner. Several Devil Rays and sharks were amongst the mix of wild life spotted. Next was Google Garden, this is where the Cuttle fish live. We then move up to the top of Ribbon #10 for the Cod Hole, always a highlight on a dive trip in the Ribbons. The always photogenic Potato Cod had their smiles ready for all the divers and snorkelers. Our final dive of the trip was at Snake Pit. The tidal current brought in numerous fish species, some for feeding some for cleaning as the parked up in the reef for a car wash from the cleaner wrasse. It was now time for us to make our way over to Lizard Island for an amazing BBQ with the sun setting in the background.
Thank you all for an special trip and Happy New Year to everyone past and present!
