3 Day Cod Hole and Ribbon Reefs
On Monday the 9th of April a bus load of guests went from landlubbers to ocean going underwater pirates as they joined Spirit Of Freedom in Cairns and comethe afternoon we were diving the Outer Barrier Reef upon Norman Reef.
Once we’d completed all the formalities along with the two orientation dives we let go of our mooring and made way for the Ribbon Reefs for our 3-day expedition along the Great Barrier Reef.
Day Two was kick started our five-dive day with a dawn dive on Steveǯs Bommie near Ribbon #3, a magnificent pinnacle rising from over 30m/110 ft. up to the surface.
Over breakfast we’d moved north to Ribbon #5 and dived Clam Gardens which boasts some of the Great Barriers largest Giant Clams spanning over one meter long and weighing up to 500kg.
After a couple hours steam further north we had made it to the upper Ribbons where we would spend the duration of theexpedition diving, the third dive was at the ever so colourful Google Gardens on Ribbon #9 where large Stag Horn corals colour the reef floor. Our final two dives of the day were at Challenger Bay one of which was the night dive and as night fell large hunting pelagics scoured the reef in search of a meal from GTs to Reef Sharks.
Early morning Wednesday we parked up next to Pixie Pinnacle as the sun rose over the GBR, what a way to start the day with a beautiful view both above and below the water.
Next up it was time for the Cod Hole! Giant Potato Cod joined us for a light snack as we all got that all important selfie with these giants of the underwater world. In the afternoon as the weather began to turn we went to one of our most protected dive sites Pixie Gardens.
What a fabulous way to finish off the remaining dives with a total of 11 dives in 3 days it was an epic trip which was not over, after the final dive we steamed north to Lizard Island for an “Aussie BBQ” prepared by our “Kiwi Chef Sam”! We got to let our hair down a little and got to know one another a little more.
Thank you all for joining us, until next time.
