3 Day Cod Hole and Ribbon Reefs
It was a spectacular sunny morning in Cairns as 25 guests boarded SOF for a 3 day adventure up the Ribbon Reefs.
We had Nigel Marsh return onboard and Minke Researcher Martha from The Minke Whale Project join us to hopefully spot the last on the Minke Whales for this season in the GBR. As well as the other wonderful guests from all over the globe.
With all guests aboard and 10 crew ready to drop the lines we headed out to Norman Reef to begin with our check out dives. Over the next 3 days we did up to 11 dives, starting at Steves Bommie where we spotted a few inquisitive Minkes. We hung out here for a double dive to maximize our minke encounters as they decided to come and play with us. Its such a special feeling sharing the ocean with this big friendly whales.
After that we made our way up to Ribbon Reef 9 where we did Google Gardensand then Challenger Bay. We spotted Sharks, Marble Rays, Barracuda, Jacks, Leafy Scorpion Fish and Octopus.
The following day we had 4 dives left and spent the morning at another hotspot Lighthouse Bommie.
Again THE MINKES DECIDED TO COME IN FOR A LITTLE WHILE. Some guest were lucky enough to be in the whale as they gracefully passed between the boat and the bommie and all the rest enjoyed the show from above as they splashed around for a few hours around the boat.
We then headed up to the Cod Hole to enjoy the close encounters with the Potato Cod before finishing off with a drift dive down dynamite Pass. The visibility was about 40M, which made for an amazing afternoon spent diving these parts of the northern GBR.
We have many photos for memories but nothing will replace the feeling of diving around in fish fill warm waters on the GBR.
Happy Days! Thanks for an awesome trip and hope to see you all underwater again one day soon.
