DIVER SAFETY ON SPIRIT OF FREEDOM
Spirit of Freedom is committed to diver safety and safe diving practices, at all times.
Nautilus Lifeline
Visiting remote coral reefs, hundreds of kilometres from the coast, diver safety is critical. As well as our professional dive crew providing detailed dive briefings, Spirit of Freedom crew divers are in the water on every dive with lookouts overseeing the water, in constant VHF contact with the dive deck and tender.
All crew are trained in Emergency Management including CPR, EAR, Oxygen Therapy and Defibrillation use. Spirit of Freedom carries a Defibrillation Unit and sufficient medical oxygen to provide 100% Oxygen whilst travelling back from the Coral Sea to a medical facility. Medivac Helicoptors are able to winch from the upper deck and evacuate any divers who may require urgent medical assistance. Missing Diver and First Aid/Evacuation procedures are practised monthly on Spirit of Freedom to ensure skill levels of the crew are maintained at the highest standards.
In a new initiative, Spirit of Freedom has also introduced the Nautilus Lifeline as standard in-water safety equipment. These are complimentary and issued to divers for their use on all Spirit of Freedom dives. These units are in addition to the existing visual and audible surface signalling devices provided (whistle, safety sausage and cylume stick).
The Nautilus Lifeline assists divers to ‘get found fast’ should they become lost on the surface, away from the Spirit of Freedom boat. What is it? The Nautilus Lifeline is a 2-Way VHF Marine Radio and GPS.
Waterproof to 130m (425 feet) the handheld unit can easily be clipped on to your BCD for diver in-water comfort. Its GPS is accurate up to 5m and it enables divers to communicate with Spirit of Freedom (and any other boat) up to 18km (12 mile) away.
The easy to use Nautilus Lifeline unit has three, colour coded buttons.
- The green button allows you to call Spirit of Freedom on the 2-way marine radio: this is a private channel.
- The orange button calls any boat around the diver, on the universal Hail and Distress Channel 16.
- The red button sends an automatic alert message and your GPS coordinates to all modern radios within an 18km range.
Spirit of Freedom crew are committed to diver safety. The Nautilus Lifeline is an extra safeguard for divers, giving you peace of mind on your Coral Sea and Great Barrier Reef diving adventure.
